LISTEN TO EPISODE 65
SCOTT DOW:
"You've got to stop and think about what you're thinking, or you'll always act impulsively. When your trigger your thinking routines, there's an acronym I want you to keep in mind. It's T.O.P.
It stands for think in the third person. Own your thoughts. And pick useful thoughts. When you think of the third person, you're going to be less emotional and more objective. When you own your thoughts, you take accountability for any irrational thinking. And when you pick useful thoughts, productive behaviors are going to follow.
I'm going to let you in on a little secret. The best coach you'll ever have is yourself. That's because you have ultimate control of your thoughts, emotions and behaviors. You can't control what's going on around you, but you control the thoughts you choose and the choices you make. Marcus Aurelius was a stoic philosopher and a Roman Emperor. And he said this: "Very little is needed to make a happy life. It's all within yourself in your way of thinking."
Now, I'm not selling you positive thinking, but when you're solving problems or making tough decisions, you got to choose your most objective, rational and useful thoughts. Life is emotional. So is business, especially for managers, and we often act emotionally.
We're human, or at least most of us are. You can't take the emotions out of it, but as a leader, you've got to manage your emotions. If you think of the third person, own your thoughts and make a conscious effort to pick useful thoughts, you're going to trigger more useful emotions, and your actions are going to be more productive."
