SCOTT DOW:
"If an employee lacks confidence, they're going to stress out, they're going to disengage, and they're going to underperform.
Confidence needs to be nurtured, and here are some ways you can do that:
- Encourage people to play through their strengths; that's a good way to show your confidence in them, and it gives them a reason to be confident.
- Draw on their past experiences, and that's going to remind them of their past success, and that's going to build confidence.
- Focus on baby steps because it's easier to be confident in less daunting tasks.
- Create quick wins and they'll find confidence sooner.
- Celebrate progress and their confidence is going to grow over time.
- Set positive expectations, because it's another good way to show your faith in them.
- Use vicarious reinforcement; when people see their peers succeed, they feel more capable too.
- Give lots of feedback and you'll reduce their uncertainty. It's hard to be confident when you don't know where you stand.
- When someone fails, be there for them. Support them and encourage them to try again, and they won't fear failure as much.
- Use them as a role model; if they do something really well, share it with others and you'll build their self esteem.
These are 10 different ways to nurture confidence, and they're all backed by science. They are going to help you build confidence in others, and these techniques also work on building your own confidence."
