REASONS TO GIVE YOURSELF A PEP TALK
- Your motivation is low
- No one else is available
- Time's a wasting!
Self-coaching technique designed to self motivate.
Have you ever noticed that successful and unsuccessful people have the same goals? The goals don't set them apart, their ability to pursue the goals set them apart.
Anyone can set meaningful goals, but few have what it takes to achieve meaningful goals. The ability to self-motivate determines success.
The problem with long term goals is that they're daily reminders that we're failing. They're demotivating. What is motivating is the progress made toward the goal.
Managers give employees pep-talks all the time. But the most important pep-talks you give are to yourself.
When you give a pep-talk to someone else, the research says you should use language that...
- Empathizes - use words that show the person you care
- Reduces uncertainty - give clear direction that eliminates doubt
- Gives meaning - explain why your direction matters
You should use the same approach with your self pep-talk. Start by being empathetic with yourself. Give yourself a break. If you don't, who else will?
To reduce uncertainty, don't focus your self pep talks on longer term goals. The longer away and more abstract your goals, the more doubt creeps in.
Focus your direction on smaller accomplishments and shorter deadlines.
Answer this question: "What would make this a good day (shorter deadline) and how would I go about making it happen? (smaller accomplishments)".
The best way to give your direction meaning is to focus on the outcome, but remember your focus is on smaller accomplishments and shorter deadlines.
Dopamine is a signal your brain sends to indicate pleasure.
When your brain senses that something good is about to happen, it releases dopamine. That's why dopamine is your brain's motivational chemical.
Daily opportunities to accomplish small but meaningful tasks will give you something positive to look forward to, and that releases dopamine.
That release of dopamine will focus your attention, improve your mood and get your blood pumping. In other words, it'll motivate you!
