- Employee engagement is the key to motivation
- The more engaged the employee, the less task specific motivation is required
Over time, you're going to face many motivational headwinds. They include rumors, gossip, open positions, unwanted changes and unpopular decisions.
Recent Gallup research indicates that only a third of employees, on average, are engaged in their work.
When engagement is low, even routine tasks require extra motivation.
Why this matters
Motivation is like a savings account. Little investments in employee engagement accrue over time. When the motivational headwinds hit (and they will!), you can draw down on the higher levels of engagement. You will still need to offer pep-talks for bigger challenges like unwanted change and unpopular decisions, but they wont be needed near as much!
