A pep-talk without clear direction is a rah-rah speech.
General (ret.) Stanley McChrystal was the commander of the Joint Special Operations Command in the mid-2000's.
He knew the importance of clear, compelling direction, so his pep-talks followed a simple formula -
- “Here’s what I’m asking you to do. . .
- Here’s why it’s important. . .
- Here’s why I know you can do it. . .
- Now let’s go and do it!”
For most people, Steps 2 & 3 don't come naturally.
We don't necessarilly explain the "why" - why our direction is important.
And in Step 3, the General took care to build confidence by explaining why the person was capable of whatever direction was given.
