The Covid-19 shutdown has created a lot of uncertainty, and uncertainty causes anxiety and stress. See Psychology of Uncertainty
There's two types uncertainty - 1.) Uncertainty about the present; and 2.) Uncertainty about the future.
If people are uncertain about the present, they'll never be certain about the future.
An effective leader infuses the present moment with certainty, clarity and focus.
Start by laying this ground work -
- Acknowledge the uncertainty - ex. "Listen, I know things are up in the air..."
- Empathize - ex. "...and I understand why you're worried."
- Manage expectations - ex. "Things are going to be unsettled for a while, and there's nothing you or I can do to change that."
Remember, relationships help people cope with uncertainty. The 3 steps above will strengthen your relationship. Now what?
Make sure you're sending the right signals.
The future is uncertain. The present doesn't have to be uncertain.
