A pep-talk is a motivational technique.
People confuse "rah-rah speeches" and pep-talks.
A "rah-rah speech" is simple encouragement. It sounds like -
- "You can do it!"
- "You've got this!"
- "Everything is going to be okay"
- "Don't worry about it"
Rah-rah speeches are happy thoughts and optimism.
People often tune out rah-rah speeches. They've heard it all before. They're viewed as superficial.
Pep-talks are different. A good pep-talk is short but specific.
A pep-talk has three elements
- Empathy
- Direction
- Motivation
Empathy - you let the person know that you understand how they feel. When you do, they'll be interested in what you have to say next.
Direction - you offer very specific advice designed to improve the person's situation.
Motivation - you give people a good reason to act on your advice.
Notice how "encouragement" isn't part of the pep-talk formula.
