The ability to give a pep-talk is a critical leadership skill. There are different types of pep-talks.
When to use ABC pep-talks
- You're in the heat of battle
- Morale has dropped
- You need the person/group to focus on a particular task
How to execute
Acknowledge - start with morale. Use empathy to acknowledge their negative emotions. Ex. "I know you're frustrated about this..."
Once you acknowledge how the person is feeling and why they're feeling that way, they'll be more open to what you have to say next.
Be directive - the key now is focus. Give clear direction. It's more than just what to do, but exactly how to do it. Ex. "...but we need to (specify task). Let's start by (clarify baby-step)."
Connect the dots - explain how your direction benefits them. Ex. "You'll feel better once we get this behind us."
