Avoid “Don’t worry about things you can’t control.” It’s an over used cliche.
It’s like telling people, “Don’t eat when you’re hungry.”
Why? People’s greatest fear is an uncontrollable threat!
Two facts of life - 1.) People are always going to worry; and 2.) The future is uncontrollable.
You goal - promote healthier, more productive worry.
We can prepare for, reduce or avoid uncontrollable threats.
Coaching tips
- Catch people worrying about a potential future threat
- Encourage them to focus on more immediate threats
- Identify immediate actions to prepare for, reduce or avoid the threat
