You can edit an existing habit to become a high value routine. Here's how -
- Prioritize - focus on what's most important (ex. performance mgmt.)
- Focus - tackle 1 routine at a time (ex. coaching employees)
- Visualize - think of the settings you encounter each day (ex. mid-morning coffee break)
- Self-assess - consider the habits you've developed in each setting (ex. "I make small talk with people present")
- Edit - insert your high value routine into the existing habit
Routines are MUCH easier to develop if you attach them to existing habits.
What your routine might look like
- Mid-morning coffee break (existing habit)
- Engage people in small talk (existing habit)
- Probe for coaching opportunities (new routine)
