When influencing behavior - there's 2 things to keep in mind:
- People act in their self-interest
- See #1 above! :-)
There are numerous psychological theories for behavioral modification, but let's not over complicate things!
Human behavior follows this simple pattern. If people think something is in their best (self) interest they will experience emotions that lead them to behave accordingly.
People wrestle with personal conflicts of interest. If they resist a behavior you want, they may be struggling with a conflict of (self) interest.
Try this -
- Share your thinking (your ideas, beliefs & attitudes)
- Share the "why" - why you believe a certain way or hold a certain attitude
- Propose their "why" - why a similar attitude would benefit them
