SCOTT DOW -
"If you're a manager, you have three key responsibilities:
- Deliver results,
- Develop people, and
- Improve the work environment.
...and each of them are important.
- If you deliver good results, but don't develop your people, the results won't last.
- If you deliver good results in a bad work environment, your people won't last.
- And if you improve the work environment with bad results, you won't last.
So you've got to do all three.
It's not all about results, and here's why...
Let's say you get good results, but your people aren't growing and the work environment doesn't improve. Your people are succeeding in spite of you, not because of you.
Remember, results are deceiving because they're influenced by a lot of factors that are outside your control. And that's why good results aren't necessarily a reflection of good leadership. But when people are growing and the work environment is improving, that is a reflection of leadership, because all those factors are within your control.
Leaders that value results, people, and the work environment equally are servant leaders. And it takes a lot of courage to be a servant leader.
When you're under pressure, it's easy to be self serving because you're focused on self-preservation. It's easy to prioritize results over people. But your people deliver the results, not you.
You're no longer an individual contributor. You're a leader. And your people in the work environment you instill are the ultimate reflection of your leadership skills."
